A court marriage is solemnised before a Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. It allows two adults to marry regardless of religion, with legal recognition and a marriage certificate.
Documents required
- Proof of age for both parties (birth certificate / matriculation certificate)
- Proof of residence (Aadhaar, passport, or utility bill)
- Passport-size photographs
- Affidavit of marital status and date of birth
- Identity and address proof of witnesses
The process in brief
- Submit a notice of intended marriage to the Marriage Officer.
- A 30-day public notice period allows objections to be raised.
- If no valid objection, the marriage is solemnised before three witnesses.
- The Marriage Officer issues the marriage certificate.
Plan for the notice period
The 30-day notice period is mandatory. Start the process at least 5–6 weeks before your intended date.
